21 - LARGE SCALE R/C MODELS

LARGE SCALE RADIO CONTROLLED MODELS

Radio controlled modelling, a hobby/sport which has been around for many years, started as ‘free flight’ & ‘gliders’, then proceeding forward to ‘petrol’ & ‘diesel’ fuel for control line models. With the technology as advanced as it is; ‘radio control’ has pretty much taken over, although small pockets of die hard ‘control line’ enthusiasts still exist. It now covers the whole gambit from large scale down to the small variety, fixed wing & rotary. Skill levels vary as much as the variety available, from ‘home built’ to ‘almost ready to fly [ARTF]’. It should be noted that ‘ARTF’ is a pre built kit which means just that; it's almost ready to fly; you just need to buy the engine & servos. There is no restriction to what you can fly, with home builds of the owners own ideas, to faithfully produced replicas of the real thing; yes; even flying lawnmowers. Jets are also on the circuit in numbers that zip around at great speed. It’s a hobby that is so vast now that knows no boundaries for old & young alike, inexperienced or experienced, male or female. All are in it for a reason, & I bet fun is right up there.

There is a new breed growing, & what they do with a model now really defies the laws of flight; they call it 3-D aerobatics that has fixed wing & rotary. The hobby does not stand still, with new ideas being tried like wingless & balloons!

This is a fun hobby for all to get involved, but be prepared, it can be infectious, & it can cost a lot of money. Its safe to say that you can be airborne for under £100 but can run in to thousands.

This only covers aircraft, but anything can be ‘radio controlled’; ships, tanks, cars, trains, ‘daleks’; yup, anything.

I found it a lot easier to have my son do an overview of R/C as this is his hobby, & who better than he. I have been to 3 large scale R/C meetings with Alex, & all 3 are covered here. Of the many pix I had to choose from, it was how good they looked to me, & why I chose that particular shot. I will apologise now for showing several remarkable real looking aircraft, this is because I am an aviation enthusiast, & hard to view these any other way. Others are general shots of the shows to give an idea on what was on show to see. I was very impressed in the skills & in many cases authenticity of many models depicted, & being a model maker, I can only admire the work that all put in…

20 - FIELD AVIATION RE-VISITED

FIELD AVIATION RE-VISITED

I enjoyed working at Field East, & most that I worked with. Many names will always be remembered, & I felt another album was needed to cover more pix that I have as a momento of my 10 years. The annual Christmas dinner was always a lavish affair, & was always enjoyable; & pix are in the album to see, although some names do escape me now. I hope you will contact me if you know a missing name, or recognize yourself. This album is really more about the guys I worked with, as much of the work is covered in the first album.

My first visit back to Canada was May 2009; 8 years after I returned home. Although it was mainly to visit our boys & their families, so not a lot of spare time was available, but I was determined that I would visit the guys at Fields. I knew several were still there as I have email contact with them, in fact lots are, & how wonderful it was to see them. By the time I started go round to see all, it was lunch time, & many dissappeared, or was that because they knew I was there; yeah thats it :) Those I saw were captured on camera. Only Coops secretary ran away & hid in a cupboard, but my skills were able to get her to open the door. I was disappointed that I never saw my friend Coop, but then I knew he was on vacation, & I was visiting earlier than planned. None the less, I really enjoyed visiting them.

The other main subject that is covered, was the admin BBQ that was held round at Cheryl's home. It was a great time, as the pix will show.

Enjoy, & do please contact me should you know any names I am missing, also check your names, as I am sure some are miss spelt.

19 - LAKER AIRWAYS

LAKER AIRWAYS

Do you recognise any of the flight attendants, or other staff shown here that I cannot remember the names of? I would surely like to know, & welcome hearing from you.

I worked at Lakers from 1972 to when I emigrated to Canada in 1977. I look back on those years with many fond memories, as I worked with some great people, & believe it or not, had some fun along the way. I am still in contact with a few through work, & pleasure. In fact today, Lorrie & I had a great meal at the 8 Bells in Bolney with Dave York. I talk to Chris Crees on occasions through business, & purhasing manager Brian Wheelhouse I often see in town. I have spoken to Dave Newman, but not since GB Airways was sold. I have also spoken to Noel Cummins after I returned to the UK in 2001, but he seems to have disappeared! Greg Dix from ops I have chatted to via email many times in the past year or more, but as for the others; nothing :( If you're out there, & read this, do please get in touch.

Due to me always carrying a camera to work [hobby of photographing aircraft] I was often tasked in taking various pix; just wish I had held more back for myself, & future memories, but of course we never thought we would have a need back then... I think I spent a lot of time with flight crew & got to know many well, where the pix were used for training [Cliff Byway] & publicity [Robin Flood], but always making sure I cleared it with Brian Wheelhouse first. Several flights were undertaken for inflight services for training; & those few I had extras of, were kept, & are shown in this album. Enjoy!

For more Laker pix please visit my aviation site, & album page 'Laker Airways - A Pictorial Tribute' at http://www.airpixbycaz.co.uk/cazsite/aviation/airlines/laker/index.html end)

18 - HICKSTEAD 1971

Hickstead 1971

I and a workmate Colin Mitchell decided to take our girlfriends to Hickstead to see some International Show Jumping. We were both in to photography, worked for the same camera store, and figured this would be a good opportunity to try our hand at photographing some action shots. We left the girls to wander around, then set off to seek and find the best spot for our intended shots.

Near the entrance to the course, we noticed some official looking people, and decided to ask if they could advise us where the best place would be. I let Colin do all the talking since he was good at it. The next thing we knew, we were being ushered in to the course… We both looked at each other not saying a word. We were advised best to stand by the jumps, and to only move around when a competitor has finished the course; thus avoiding distracting rider and horse. Well; this is far better than we could ever expect. I guess we were accepted as photographers sent by an agency on assignment; so here is my reward…

You will notice that many riders are marked as unknown which is due to the old grey cells being unable to recall names after nearly 40 years. I was able to get help on several via Hickstead; thank you Lizzie.

17 - LORRIE'S PIX MIX

While the last album was my airshow photographs, this is everything else. I really enjoy just taking photographs of anything, & if it looks like a good photograph to take, then I will just take it. Not all photograhs turn out how I would like, but those that do, I really enjoy looking at, & hope you will also. While I am not too familiar with Elements, Caz is, so I used his knowledge to do what I needed to see the photograph I had in mind. The cameras used are Fuji Finepix for every photograph prior to 2008, & a Nikon D50 from 2008 on. Apart from the standard lens, I also use the Nikon 70~300 zoom.

16 - LORRIE'S AIRCRAFT PIX

It was hubbys idea that I put some of my airshow photograhs on this site. I said I don’t have any good ones, & his comment was that I did. So I chose the following, with a bit of help from Caz, & I hope that you will like the selection. For those of you interested in the cameras I used for these pix, they are the Fuji Finepix for all 2006 & 2007 photographs, with all the 2008 ones taken on my Nikon D50, with a Nikon 70-300 zoom.

15 - FIELD AVIATION

FIELD AVIAITON

I started work at Field Aviation in early 1991. I was approached by Richard McMechan going in to work [working part time at Air Ontario] one morning & he asked if i was interested in a buyer’s job at Fields; naturally I accepted. I knew Richard from my Wardair days, & it was great to get full time work again. I eventually worked a very enjoyable 10 years until the decision was made to go home.

While at Fields I met, and worked with some great people, I am still in contact with a few today. Field East as we called it, worked on many interesting projects during my tenure, and I have put together this smattering of pix in a way of a tribute to all that I worked with. While I took pix of many projects and fellow employees, many of these were passed along. For those interested in the many aircraft that graced Field Aviation's ramp, please check out my aviation site at http://www.airpixbycaz.co.uk/cazsite/aviation/avgen/fieldav/index.html

I will no doubt compile a part 2 to this, as I have come across negatives that I thought I had passed on. There is still one image that has 3 colleagues un-identified, so if you can help; please email me. So as they say; watch this space, & enjoy.

Special thanks to Chris Cooper-Slipper; Vic Czaplinsky & Carol Young for identification of faces for me.

I started work at Field Aviation in early 1991. I was approached by Richard McMechan going in to work [working part time at Air Ontario] one morning & he asked if i was interested in a buyer_s job at Fields; naturally I accepted. I knew Richard from my Wardair days, & it was great to get full time work again. I eventually worked a very enjoyable 10 years until the decision was made to go home.

14 - 1970's FORMULA 1 RACES

1970’S FORMULA 1 RACES

This paragraph is the same as on 1970’S TOURING CAR AND FORMULA 2 RACES as it really must start the same way, and for the same reasons. I have long had a fascination for motor racing, but the early 70’s was probably the best from my point of view. It was not unusual for me to pick up the weekly ‘Autosport’ along with my normal ‘Aircraft Illustrated’, where I would check on my favorites for race results, and standings.

Formula 1 was really the one for me, but surprisingly, I only went to two races, both of which are covered in this gallery. I found meeting and chatting to the drivers of the day was just out of this world. I do not believe you can get as close to the drivers today as you could back then. All appeared to have time to chat, or time for an autograph, there was just such a good feeling as you walked around the pits taking pix and looking with no harassment from race officials. As can be seen in one of my pix, the rivalry was on the track, not off it as can be seen from two great drivers like Peter Gethin and Mike Hailwood enjoying a laugh together; a great atmosphere. There were the loners, but they were always happy for photographs to be taken. Britain had a lot of talented drivers back then, and something all race fans were proud of; come on Hamilton, bring it back to us.

Well done Lewis! You made us all so proud with your win at Interlagos. The last race of 2008. May there be many more.
Fantastic!
Lewis Hamilton - World Champion 2008!

Lorrie and I were at the race when the great, Jo Siffert crashed on the 14th lap at Hawthorns in the October of 1971. I am happy and sad, that I got a photograph of Siffert on his last lap. We could see black smoke rising in the distance, and no one knew what had happened. There was an eerie silence over Brands as the speakers all fell silent. You knew something bad had happened, but you did not know what. No cars came round for what appeared to be the longest time. All the spectators appeared to be checking off the program as cars started appearing one by one. It was soon known, as one car never came round. A very sad end to what was to be a great victory race.

My Formula 1 hero was the ‘super Swede’, Ronnie Peterson. Lorrie and I followed his career in the papers and ‘Autosport’ right up to that fateful day on the Monza circuit in 1978. After this, Lorrie and I lost our interest for Formula 1; for we now had just started a new life in Canada.

Enjoy the pix, and I hope it brings back some great memories for you also…

13 - 1970’S TOURING CAR AND FORMULA 2 RACES

1970’S TOURING CAR AND FORMULA 2 RACES

This paragraph is the same as on 1970’S FORMULA 1 RACES as it really must start the same way, and for the same reasons. I have long had a fascination for motor racing, but the early 70’s was probably the best from my point of view. It was not unusual for me to pick up the weekly ‘Autosport’ along with my normal ‘Aircraft Illustrated’, where I would check on my favorites for race results, and standings.

Please see my other gallery for my Formula 1 pix

I am not sure of the correct name, but I expect that someone will soon tell me if touring car racing is correct, or should be saloon car racing; until then I will use the term of touring.

Seeing races with US muscle cars along side Escorts, Minis and Imps was a surprise for me, but very exciting. The competitiveness on the track ensured the spectator of a very exciting race with many dramatic moves. Zekia Redjep was always a favorite to follow, in his Escort, then to check how he did in other races.

I only ever saw the one Formula 2 race, and this was the start of me enjoying and following Formula 1. It seems that Formula 2 drivers back then, were also doing Formula 1, as I am sure you will recognize the names of those in the pix. Maybe someone out there can confirm that for me.

Look at these pix; could you get that close to photograph the action today; of course not, and I am glad of the few shots I did get. The same old story I could not always afford the film, and when I could, it was more for my aircraft pix.

12 - BIRDS

BIRDS

I first became interested in taking the occasional photo of birds, when I put up a bird feeder in our backyard in the 80’s during our years in Canada. I was fascinated by the many varieties, along with the coloring of birds that sat on the fence. Most birds that did visit the feeder were sparrows, but occasionally others would appear.

The American Robin was the first to catch my eye, as it was totally different to our own Robin, although seen the same times of year.

I had thought of putting one up in our backyard here, but there are far to many cats strolling the fence tops, & fear this would not bring as many as I would like; but that thought is still there…

11 - CAZ GOES FLYING

CAZ GOES FLYING

TIGER MOTH FLIGHT

I had many surprises on my 60th, with all being very special to me. The present received from my work colleagues, can be seen through these images; that of a flight in a Tiger Moth. The flight out of Shoreham took place at 4pm on a Saturday afternoon on October 11th 2008

Stuart Rawlinson gave me a brief rundown on procedure, & what part I would play in getting ‘Mike November, November’ ready for flight. When Stuart called ‘contact’ I would switch the magnetos on, & pull the stick right back. After a few attempts, the Tigers Gypsy Major sprang to life. While I was holding her from moving forward; Stuart removed the chocks.

Soon after procedures, we were taxiing out to runway 07/25 for our take off; this was the grass one. Very sedately the Tiger gracefully left the ground below with a gentle climb out to follow the coast line to Brighton. I was now experiencing string & fabric in an open cockpit. I never really heard the engine or Stuart talking through the intercom, for I was now in another world. Being in the front cockpit you get the wonderful feeling of flight on your own; it was wonderful; silly, but ‘Biggles’ sprang to mind. All too soon, we were lining up for our landing. I felt the Tiger springing wonderfully on its undercarriage as we touchdown. The flight throughout was very smooth with no turbulence felt the whole time I was up.

My ground crew awaited my arrival; both Lorrie & eldest son Alex took all the external pix before & after.

06 - LORRIES PIX

LORRIES PIX

The missus has been using a camera for 40 odd years, mainly for snap shots, but after our move to Canada, and caring for the boys as they grew up, rarely used a camera at all. A few years in the 80’s saw her using a video camera for holidays and the boy’s hockey, but the interest soon passed. Finally, on our return home, Lorrie often picked up my 35mm Nikon, or more recently my FinePix for the occasional pix. Interest grew when Lorrie was encouraged by seeing our friend Linda taking pix, and once I converted to my DSLR’s, the FinePix became Lorries, and that was it…
So with that, here is a selection of my favorites of Lorrie’s pix

05 - TOUCHDOWN

TOUCHDOWN...

This folder contains a very small selection of my aircraft collection of literally 1000’s. This folder was not meant to be, I had made a decision right from the start that there will be no aircraft on this site. I then decided after a lot of yes/no, that I would add one small folder of aircraft, & called it touchdown; as the title suggests, the shots are of aircraft in the process of landing. If you like these, you will find many more on my dedicated site of www.airpixbycaz.co.uk

07 - SCOUTS CANADA - 10th BRAMPTON ...updated

SCOUTS CANADA

I was 13 years with the 10th Brampton wolf cub pack. All 3 of our boys were in cubs, and I stayed on, long after they had finished, and only stepping down, because I was missing much of their hockey. I progressed on to become a ‘Gilwellian, and was very proud of it. Cubs has given me so many happy memories, not just the fun, or the achievements the pack did as a whole, but to see many of these kids in later years, many going out of their way to say ‘do you remember me’; I sure did. The running of the pack was not achieved by me alone, over the years, I had many moms and dads become my assistant leaders.
While I ran the pack, we would never get cubs to do any challeges without doing it ourselves, & getting involved in everything. For many years we took pride in the pack wearing full uniform [leaders too], & that meant wearing the uniform shorts. In the 90's with the environmental changes, resulted in suggesting full uniform to be worn waist up only if parents agreed.

How, and why did I get involved...
When I wanted to enroll Alex in to cubs, I made every excuse to get out of becoming a leader. It was the ‘if you want your kid to be a cub, then you will need to become a leader’, that got me involved very quickly. They said one year, and only an hour and a half a week… I would like to meet that joker… I took over the pack the following year, and spent upward of 10 hours a week not including weekends; they were longer, but oh! boy did I ever enjoy it. Look well O wolves, look well…

09 - SIXTIES MOD'S .....updated

SCOOTERS

Maybe my miss spent youth could be used here too. I was a ‘mod’, and proud of it, the 60’s, as mentioned in the ‘groups’ folder, was a great time to be a teen. We never got in, or looked for trouble, we always hi-tailed it out when we saw it coming.

These are pix from these ‘mod’ days.
When you get older, you start to appreciate more of what you did way back then, so much so, that I yearned for a scoot again. In 2002, I bought two to restore, & these finally were completed & put on the road in 2007; yes, you will see them here too.
Now re-live my 'hacyon days'

RAIL PIX

I was your typical train spotting school kid when growing up in the 50’s.I regrettably took only a couple of pix of the steam era, and then it was gone so quick. This folder contains a mix of my pix [all types] in their working lives as well as in the days of preservation. Thankfully there are many great preserved steam railways around the country to see & enjoy.I know I will be criticized on the following two comments, but this is just my thinking. I personally enjoy only British steam locos as I feel they have so much character. To take this one step further, my interest lies in only steam in BR days, and the dirtier the better…
Like the buses, they are not all old, but some will be in B&W.
You will also see a couple put in from Canada.

08 - OUT & ABOUT, BUT NOT JUST THE UK ...updated

HERE & THERE

Just a few of my favorite pix from over the years, these are mostly from the UK, but other countries are included. Canada is not included here for obvious reasons, as this is covered seperately. I have tried to make it as varied as possible. There maybe some familiar landmarks while others are not. Where ever I was, there always seemed to be something worth photographing. A varied mix that I hope you will like, from near and far.

A varied mix that I hope you will like, from near and far.

03 - MINOR HOCKEY - ICE & ROLLER

HOCKEY

Ah! A sport we came to love so much; and still do. Much thanks must go to our 3 boys; Alex, Mark & Rob for giving us much pleasure & excitement over the years that they played.
When our boys got involved, one by one, we were soon hooked. This is a great sport for kids, and you really get to understand the game very quickly. We became very involved with their respective teams through the years right from the start. All three were in the non-contact house league level at an early age which any kid could play. All 3 made it in to rep; Alex to rep A; Rob to rep A, and Mark to rep AAA, and junior. We never pushed the boys, or got in to the politics of AAA and up. We often wonder though; what if------?
Both Mark & Rob played in-line, in some cases, 3 levels at a time. Mark played junior in-line most of the time, & was fortunate to play in the coveted NARCh [North American Roller-hockey Championships] on several occasions, & taking the crown twice.
I dedicate this collection to Alex, Mark & Rob; thanks for so much enjoyment

10 - MY MISS SPENT YOUTH IN A ROCK BAND...updated December 2008

THE SECT - THE FALCONS - THE 4 7/8ths
[rock band days]

My miss spent youth; there is no better way to describe it, as my friend Mick Jones said. The swinging 60’s it sure was, just a fabulous period for a teen to be a part of.
I was in three pop groups, but I think rock bands sound far better, & more appropriate in this day & age. The Sect was my starting point, and these were the learning years. The Falcons came next, and that was truly the fun year, & latterly called the New Falcons. Then came the fabulous 4 7/8th and I was so pleased to be a part of this great local band. There were big boots to fill, but I fully enjoyed my time with them; thanks Roger. You can find a lot more about two of these groups in Mike Reads book, “The South Coast Beat Scene of the 60’s”.
I never stopped playing/composing from that day on; in fact there are some recent pix that I decided to put in of this ancient rocker in Canada, with my buddy Ron Kingerski

Update on the Sect [girls] from band member Rod Woodhatch. Rod & I were chatting at a friends 60th recently, & has corrected the names of the girls for me. Thanks Rod. Sorry ladies, & if any of you see this site, please contact me.

02 - VIEWS FROM 23 YEARS LIVING IN CANADA

CANADA

Living in Canada for 23 years, it is not surprising that I have a folder on Canada. I was lucky to see so much, which is attributed to starting out in Vancouver in 1977. With the next stop being Edmonton a year later, for three months. Here; I witnessed a torrential rainstorm, and this was the day our belongings arrived from Vancouver; figures. I am glad I never witnessed a winter there; it was the start of cold weather in September! I finally ended up in Ontario where I stayed until our return home in 2001.
Included in here are some pix from trips south of the border.

01 - BUSES - A VARIED LOOK

A VARIED LOOK

These are mostly from the UK, but with a smattering from Malta, Canada, and France.
Time span is from 1962 through to today, and covers a mix of the working buses, and those that are in preservation. I have elected to show only my favorite UK buses. Buses probably come second to aircraft, but it will never be ahead of them. Buses fascinated me as a kid, & to see so many ‘Southdown’, this naturally became my favorite operator. I use to go to the Southdown garage in Horsham’s Denne Road, where they would let me go & sit in the cab of Guy Utilities that were stored there in the 50’s. After Southdown, I was always drawn to the red London bus. I used to go down town to the A24 in Horsham & watch the weekend procession of seaside specials. Ah! Memories of those red buses of the 50’s…

Wednesday 7 June 2006: A VARIED LOOK

These are mostly from the UK, but with a smattering from Malta, Canada, and France.
Time span is from 1962 through to today, and covers a mix of the working buses, and those that are in preservation. I have elected to show only my favorite UK buses. Buses probably come second to aircraft, but it will never be ahead of them. Buses fascinated me as a kid, & to see so many _Southdown_, this naturally became my favorite operator. I use to go to the Southdown garage in Horsham_s Denne Road, where they would let me go & sit in the cab of Guy Utilities that were stored there in the 50_s. After Southdown, I was always drawn to the red London bus. I used to go down town to the A24 in Horsham & watch the weekend procession of seaside specials. Ah! Memories of those red buses of the 50_s_
