LARGE SCALE RADIO CONTROLLED MODELS

Radio controlled modelling, a hobby/sport which has been around for many years, started as ‘free flight’ & ‘gliders’, then proceeding forward to ‘petrol’ & ‘diesel’ fuel for control line models. With the technology as advanced as it is; ‘radio control’ has pretty much taken over, although small pockets of die hard ‘control line’ enthusiasts still exist. It now covers the whole gambit from large scale down to the small variety, fixed wing & rotary. Skill levels vary as much as the variety available, from ‘home built’ to ‘almost ready to fly [ARTF]’. It should be noted that ‘ARTF’ is a pre built kit which means just that; it's almost ready to fly; you just need to buy the engine & servos. There is no restriction to what you can fly, with home builds of the owners own ideas, to faithfully produced replicas of the real thing; yes; even flying lawnmowers. Jets are also on the circuit in numbers that zip around at great speed. It’s a hobby that is so vast now that knows no boundaries for old & young alike, inexperienced or experienced, male or female. All are in it for a reason, & I bet fun is right up there.

There is a new breed growing, & what they do with a model now really defies the laws of flight; they call it 3-D aerobatics that has fixed wing & rotary. The hobby does not stand still, with new ideas being tried like wingless & balloons!

This is a fun hobby for all to get involved, but be prepared, it can be infectious, & it can cost a lot of money. Its safe to say that you can be airborne for under £100 but can run in to thousands.

This only covers aircraft, but anything can be ‘radio controlled’; ships, tanks, cars, trains, ‘daleks’; yup, anything.

I found it a lot easier to have my son do an overview of R/C as this is his hobby, & who better than he. I have been to 3 large scale R/C meetings with Alex, & all 3 are covered here. Of the many pix I had to choose from, it was how good they looked to me, & why I chose that particular shot. I will apologise now for showing several remarkable real looking aircraft, this is because I am an aviation enthusiast, & hard to view these any other way. Others are general shots of the shows to give an idea on what was on show to see. I was very impressed in the skills & in many cases authenticity of many models depicted, & being a model maker, I can only admire the work that all put in…
