| Hickstead 1971
I and a workmate Colin Mitchell decided to take our girlfriends to Hickstead to see some International Show Jumping. We were both in to photography, worked for the same camera store, and figured this would be a good opportunity to try our hand at photographing some action shots. We left the girls to wander around, then set off to seek and find the best spot for our intended shots. Near the entrance to the course, we noticed some official looking people, and decided to ask if they could advise us where the best place would be. I let Colin do all the talking since he was good at it. The next thing we knew, we were being ushered in to the course… We both looked at each other not saying a word. We were advised best to stand by the jumps, and to only move around when a competitor has finished the course; thus avoiding distracting rider and horse. Well; this is far better than we could ever expect. I guess we were accepted as photographers sent by an agency on assignment; so here is my reward… You will notice that many riders are marked as unknown which is due to the old grey cells being unable to recall names after nearly 40 years.
