CAZ GOES FLYING
TIGER MOTH FLIGHT
I had many surprises on my 60th, with all being very special to me. The present received from my work colleagues, can be seen through these images; that of a flight in a Tiger Moth. The flight out of Shoreham took place at 4pm on a Saturday afternoon on October 11th 2008
Stuart Rawlinson gave me a brief rundown on procedure, & what part I would play in getting ‘Mike November, November’ ready for flight. When Stuart called ‘contact’ I would switch the magnetos on, & pull the stick right back. After a few attempts, the Tigers Gypsy Major sprang to life. While I was holding her from moving forward; Stuart removed the chocks.
Soon after procedures, we were taxiing out to runway 07/25 for our take off; this was the grass one. Very sedately the Tiger gracefully left the ground below with a gentle climb out to follow the coast line to Brighton. I was now experiencing string & fabric in an open cockpit. I never really heard the engine or Stuart talking through the intercom, for I was now in another world. Being in the front cockpit you get the wonderful feeling of flight on your own; it was wonderful; silly, but ‘Biggles’ sprang to mind. All too soon, we were lining up for our landing. I felt the Tiger springing wonderfully on its undercarriage as we touchdown. The flight throughout was very smooth with no turbulence felt the whole time I was up.
My ground crew awaited my arrival; both Lorrie & eldest son Alex took all the external pix before & after.
